Meklit Abebe is an award-winning researcher working at the intersection of geopolitics and natural resource governance. Currently an undergraduate at Pomona College pursuing a double major in Middle Eastern Studies and Politics, her research centers on regional water rights, land sovereignty, and human capital.
Most recently, she collaborated with a team of doctoral students and multimodal media practitioners to populate the Aqueous Earth Catalog with new data alongside Ennuri Jo, as part of the Media Mapper Project at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC). Her geospatially engineered mapper, "Water in Egypt," digitally anchors the country's primary water supply channels to visualize the hydro-political implications of state-controlled nationalization projects.
In 2025, Meklit delivered a keynote panel at the 11th International Youth Conference, reaching 400,000+ attendees across 171+ countries. She received outstanding remarks from the IOY Team as well as President and CEO Syed Ali Mustafa, with whom she later partnered to develop programming for UNGA 80 in New York City. In addition to her global engagements, she was selected for formal media accreditation by the University of Chicago's Pearson Institute to cover the 2024 Pearson Global Forum.
Her independent research project was conducted at the Library of Congress in the African and Middle Eastern Division during her time as a Kluge Research Intern. Meklit’s work has been featured at 4 conferences: the “Media Mappers on the Globe” mini-symposium at the University of Pennsylvania; and competitive national research conferences across Yale University (3rd Place) and James Madison University (1st Place)—with invitations to present at UMBC and NYU. These honors include top awards, merit-based grants, and funding in recognition of her scholarly contributions to the humanities.
Meklit was recently named a finalist for the Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service and is a recipient of the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship in Morocco. She continued her Arabic language studies at the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center on scholarship. She was recently featured in a Theirworld article amidst the 2026 World Bank & International Monetary Fund’s Spring Meetings. Meklit is the founder and editor of Diplomatic Dispatch, a global quarterly newsletter reaching a multi-continental readership for Diplomats Without Borders. Previously, she published articles as a former staff columnist for the Northeastern University Political Review (NUPR) and as a contributing writer for the UN Foundation’s Shot at Life advocacy campaign.
